Facilities
Queensland has the largest army base in the country and is at the front line of army deployment in Australia, with around 40% of Australian Army personnel and two of the three Army Beersheba brigades based in the state. Our defence bases include:
Army Aviation Centre
Oakey Army Aviation Centre is situated approximately 3 km from the town centre of Oakey in Queensland. It provides a training establishment for Australian Army Aviation and also hosts the Republic of Singapore Air Force's Helicopter Detachment.
Borneo Barracks
Borneo Barracks is located approximately 14 kilometres north of Toowoomba and 105 kilometres west of Brisbane. Borneo Barracks accommodates Army’s deployable electronic warfare unit and Defence’s electronic warfare operator training unit.
Gallipoli (Enoggera) Barracks
Gallipoli Barracks, Brisbane, is the home base for the Australian Army's 7th Brigade. The facility incorporates the Deployable Joint Force Headquarters, a major manoeuvre formation, local support facilities and a range of training facilities.
HMAS Cairns
HMAS Cairns is a Royal Australian Navy base located adjacent to the Trinity Inlet on the shore of Trinity Bay in Cairns, Queensland. HMAS Cairns has responsibility extending from Rockhampton to Thursday Island and provides maintenance, logistic and administrative support for Cairns fleet-based units.
Lavarack Barracks
Lavarack Barracks in Townsville is the largest Australian Army base and is home-base for the 3rd Brigade and includes the Operational Deployment Force and facilities to undertake mission rehearsal exercises prior to deployment.
Wide Bay Training Area
The Wide Bay Training Area supports 7th Brigade units to conduct combat team training.
Shoalwater Bay Training Area
Shoalwater Bay Training Area is the Australian Defence Force's principal amphibious operations training ground and combines blue-water naval forces with comparable air and land assets, allowing large-scale joint exercises.
Kokoda Barracks
Kokoda Barracks in Canungra is the base for Queensland's Land Warfare Centre.
Greenbank Training Area
Greenbank Training Area serves as a live-fire military range for the Australian Defence Force.
RAAF Base Amberley
RAAF Base Amberley is located 40 km south-west of Brisbane on the outskirts of Ipswich. It is Air Force's largest base and employs over 5000 people.
RAAF Base Scherger
RAAF Base Scherger is located on the western side of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland. It is a northern bare base and a strategic outpost, designed for operational units to move into existing facilities at little or no notice for defence requirements and exercises.
RAAF Base Townsville
RAAF Base Townsville is a forward operating base located north-west of Townsville.
Townsville Field Training Area
Townsville Field Training Area serves as a live-fire military range for the Australian Defence Force.
